Whispers from across the Narrow Sea came of a man, Anakin the Sky Walker, who was born a slave and gained his freedom on the back of a dragon. They said he didn’t just free himself, but helped other slaves take back their freedom as well. Most in Westeros dismissed the rumors as sailor stories. Dragons had been dead for almost a century and a half while their riders were dead or had fallen to the lowest rungs of society. Queen Padme scarcely paid the tales any mind. She had enough to worry about with the dangerous political games between enemies and allies and making sure her people were fed. Pleasing one lord or lady would often end in alienating another. And there were always those who insisted a woman had no place on the Iron Throne.

When word came of Slaver’s Bay crumbling and the powerful following Anakin had gained among the Freedmen, those in Westeros began to take the stories seriously. Some among Padme’s advisors insisted this growing army was a threat. Slavery had never been legal in Westeros, but they indirectly profited from the slave trade. Others thought of the wealth captured from the slave cities and wondered what a strong ally this Anakin could become. Padme began to wonder the same thing herself as the lions began to circle and threats of civil war grew louder. She sent envoys to Essos to take the measure of this man and propose an alliance.

Queen Padme’s envoys were not the first to reach Anakin. Lord Sheev Palpatine of Casterly Rock had also sent his vassal, Ser Tarkin, to hire him and his followers as sellswords in the war he planned to wage against the Queen on the Iron Throne. Anakin, Kitster, and their fellow freedmen didn’t need to discuss the offer long. They had fought for their own freedom and the freedom of others in bondage. They didn’t fight to terrorize commonfolk in exchange for coin just so one greedy man could lay claim to a pointy chair. In comparison, Queen Padme’s offers were far sweeter: land for the freedmen to settle and build lives away from their oppressors, indisputable rights as free citizens of Westeros, a voice on the Queen’s Council in exchange for their assistance in maintaining peace in the realm and it would be sealed with marriage alliances, one specifically between Anakin and the queen.

The discussion of this offer among the Freedmen was equally as short. The Free Cities were amassing armies to crush them and restore Slaver’s Bay. Rather than making a stand and losing countless brothers and sisters, they sailed for Westeros for a new life and helped Queen Padme crush Palpatine’s Rebellion at it’s very start. Life wasn’t perfect in their new home. There were those who resented so many foreigners of low birth claiming land and rank. They particularly resented a former slave becoming the queen’s consort and father to her heirs. But the time of peace in the long summer that followed smoothed over resentments while Padme and Anakin found much to love in each outside of politics and battle.
